How to Learn English Fast

English is the most widely used language.  It’s the language of the internet and International Business.  Plus, if you want to study at an English speaking University, you will need to sit an English exam, such as IELTS or TOEFL.

So, are you getting impatient? Do you want to know how to learn English fast?  Here are some tips to help you:

  1. Start speaking as soon as You Can

It’s a fact that if you try to have regular conversations with fluent English speakers you will learn English fast.

in 2016, The University of Michigan conducted a study and discovered that students having online conversations learnt a language more quickly than those learning from grammar and vocabulary textbooks.

So, the faster you learn to practise your language skills out loud, the faster you will be able to speak confidently.

First learn a few useful phrases to help you get started and write any new phrases down in a notebook.  Keep Google Translate handy whilst you have your conversation.

Now find a speaking buddy to help you get going.  At first you may only be able to have short conversations but your conversations will become longer as you learn more.  Continue writing any new phrases down in your notebook.

Keep going and your confidence will soar.

  1. Start reading

There’s so much good English reading material available now, both online and offline.

Reading English classics, such as Dickens, is good.  If you find the full versions difficult then read the childrens’ versions   Here are other ideas:

  • Read English magazines about your hobbies and interests.
  • Follow some English / American celebritieson Twitter or Facebook
  • Read the English version of your favourite books.
  1. Practise Regularly

It’s necessary to practise regularly to learn English fast, regular practice has to become a habit. You are more likely to practise if you find someone to become accountable to

It will help you to stay motivated if you set an alarm on your phone to remind you to do some studying at a certain time each day, but if would be more effective find a partner who is also learning English so that you can keep each other motivated.  Regularly compare each other’s progress.

  1. Set useful targets

Good targets are ones that allow you to track your progress   They are “SMART” Goals.  SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Therefore, a SMART goal has all five of those attributes to help you to focus your efforts and increase your chances of achieving your goal.  Here are some examples of SMART goals:

  • Within two months, I want to be able to have short conversations about common topics, such as the weather or sport, with a native English speaker.
  • After twelve months of learning English online, I want to score Band 7.5  in the IELTS exam, so I can apply and get accepted to an English University.
  1. Stay Motivated

To learn English fast you will need to stay motivated.

To stay motivated keep your ultimate goal in mind.

For example, you may have a goal of wanting to learn English so that you can get a better job so that you can earn more.  Why?  Maybe, so that you can travel more or so that you can give a better standard of living to your family.  So, in these examples, travelling more or providing for your family would be your ultimate goal.

Keep your mind focused on your ultimate goal  in order to stay motivated.
